THE FOX BOOKSHOP

My grandparents, Madeline and Joe Fox opened the Joseph Fox Bookshop on Sansom Street in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1951. For seventy years the shop was a destination for anyone with an interest in art, architecture and literature. Joe passed away in 1998 and the shop was run by Madeline and my uncle, Michael and aunt Judy until it closed in 2021.

Since Madeline’s passing in 2020, we have been lovingly reviewing her small archive of letters, slides, photographs and notes which tell the amazing story of the bookshop.

With Madeline’s archive and familiar family stories, I am working on a short documentary film that will tell the story of how Madeline and Joe established the shop on Sansom Street.

If you have a story to share about the bookshop or would like to support the project, I would love to hear from you.
